The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation has awarded the Associated Colleges of the South a $10,000 grant to support programs marking the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare.  In keeping with the mission of the Delmas Foundation to promote “the advancement and perpetuation of humanistic inquiry and artistic creativity by encouraging excellence in scholarship and the performing arts,” the ACS grant will support the 1616 Symposium hosted by Rhodes College on April 21-23, 2016.  This multidisciplinary symposium will engage scholars from across the liberal arts in a discussion of 1616 — a year that saw the deaths of Shakespeare, Cervantes, and Tang Xianzu; the closing of Japan to foreigners;  the placing of Copernicus on the Index; Pocahontas’ visit to London; Galileo’s meeting with Cardinal Bellarmine; the publication of Ben Jonson’s collected plays; a smallpox epidemic in New England; Harvey’s discussion of the circulation of blood; and the arrival of the first slaves in the British colony of Bermuda.  Presentations will be streamed live and archived recordings and related resources will be available on a “1616” website made possible by the grant.
